Tetris is a video game that was first released on June 6, 1984. Designed and programmed by Aleksei Pazhitnov in the Soviet Union, its name derives from the Greek prefix tetra (four) and from tennis, Pazhitnov's favorite sport. Although there are different versions of Tetris, the most successful was the version for Game Boy released in 1989. All the pieces in the Tetris game, called tetrominoes, are geometric figures composed of four square blocks joined orthogonally. The original version has 7 different pieces of different colors. These pieces will be generated at the top of the playing area and will descend little by little through it. The player cannot prevent this fall, but can decide the rotation of the piece (0°, 90°, 180°, 270°) and where it should fall, moving it to the right or left of the playing area. Each horizontal line that is completed disappears and the pieces above it move down one position. This will free up space on the board, which will make it easier to place the new pieces that are generated. The rate at which the pieces fall will accelerate as the game progresses. The game of Tetris ends when the pieces pile up on top of each other until new ones are prevented from being generated.
